Recently, I added a growatt 48v battery bank to my rooftop solar setup, mostly because summer electricity bills had become ridiculous. My existing panels produced plenty during the day, but we were still buying expensive grid power between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when the cooking, air conditioner, and water heater were all running.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My installer mounted the inverter and battery in the garage, then programmed the system to charge from solar first and discharge during peak hours. I chose a 10-kWh LiFePO4 solar battery, although the usable capacity is slightly lower after reserving backup power. The app took an afternoon to understand. At first, I kept changing settings and accidentally limited discharge to a few hundred watts. Once I switched the operating mode to self-consumption, the numbers made much more sense.
In the first full month, my evening grid use dropped by roughly 60%. My bill fell from about $186 to $109, despite using the air conditioner almost every night. That saving is not perfectly consistent—cloudy days still hurt—but watching the battery carry the house through dinner is satisfying. It usually reaches 100% by early afternoon, then settles around 25% by bedtime.
I did have one small scare. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at night even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I power-cycled the inverter, checked the breaker, and discovered the update had reset the time-of-use schedule. Re-entering the peak window fixed it immediately. Since then, the solar storage system has been boring in the best possible way: quiet, automatic, and predictable.
I still keep a little grid reserve for outages rather than draining the pack completely. It will not replace every kilowatt I buy, and winter production is a different story, but I’m happy with the practical savings.
