I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, mainly because my evening electricity use was eating into the savings from my rooftop panels. After dinner, I usually run the dishwasher, charge phones, stream television, and sometimes use the heat pump. Before the battery, those hours came straight from the grid, when rates were highest.
My installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar during the day. The surprise was that the battery did not immediately discharge at sunset. The installer had set a reserve level for outages, so it waited until the reserve threshold was reached. Once I understood that setting, the behavior made sense.
The biggest difference shows up on my utility bill. My peak-hour usage dropped from roughly 18-20 kWh per month to nothing in sunny months. My bill is usually about $35-$50 lower than before, depending on weather and rates. It also feels good to use stored solar energy instead of buying expensive power at 7 p.m. On cloudy days, the battery empties sooner, so I pull from the grid; it has not eliminated my bill.
I had one minor troubleshooting moment after a firmware update. The app showed the battery offline even though the inverter lights were normal. I power-cycled the communications gateway, waited ten minutes, and reconnected Wi-Fi. The data returned, and the battery continued operating normally. That taught me to check the physical indicators before assuming something expensive had failed.
So far, I am happy with the solar battery. I keep an eye on depth of discharge and temperature, because I want the lithium ion battery lifespan to be long. I do not expect complete energy independence, but this system makes my evening electricity use more predictable and noticeably cheaper.
