Using my solar battery after sunset has changed the way I think about electricity. I installed a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate storage battery last spring, mainly to avoid buying power during our utility’s expensive evening window. Our rooftop solar already covered much of the daytime load, but the battery now carries the house through dinner, laundry, and the first part of the night.

The biggest difference appears on my bill. Before storage, our air conditioner and electric oven pushed consumption into peak pricing between 4 and 9 p.m. In July, that regularly added $70 to $90 above the solar credit. With the battery set to charge from solar and discharge during those hours, my last three summer bills were between $18 and $32. I still pay the connection charge, of course, but the change is obvious when I compare statements.

My installer paired it with an aurora inverter, and the monitoring app makes the energy flow easy to understand. I can see solar production, battery state of charge, household demand, and grid imports without opening a spreadsheet. I had to adjust the backup reserve from the default 30 percent to 20 percent because I wanted more evening savings. That setting is not something I changed casually; I kept enough capacity for short outages and checked local rules with the installer.

There was one small scare in the first month. The battery stopped discharging one evening even though the app showed plenty of stored energy. I checked the inverter display and found an error indicating a communication interruption, not a dead battery. Power-cycling the gateway according to the manual restored it in about five minutes. Since then, I have not repeated the problem, but I now glance at the system status before bed. That habit gives useful peace of mind.
