Running my home on solar power felt useful from day one, but adding a battery changed how much of that energy I actually used. My system includes a growatt on grid inverter, rooftop solar panels, and a 10 kWh lithium battery. Before the battery, I sent plenty of afternoon electricity back to the grid and then bought power again during the evening peak. That always felt backwards.
Now the battery charges through the afternoon, usually reaching 90–100% by around 4 p.m. Once our household starts cooking, running the dishwasher, and using lights, the battery supplies most of the power. On sunny days, my grid consumption during the expensive evening period is almost zero. Our electricity bill has dropped by roughly 35–45% compared with the same months before installation. The exact saving changes with weather and air-conditioning use, but the difference is obvious.
The most useful practical feature has been the battery reserve setting. I keep about 20% in reserve rather than draining it completely. That gives us some backup during short outages, while still allowing the solar battery to do meaningful work every evening. I did have one small troubleshooting moment when the battery stopped discharging after a firmware update. The monitoring app showed it was connected, but the charge level stayed fixed. I shut down the inverter and battery according to the manual, waited several minutes, and restarted everything. After that, discharge resumed normally.
I also pay closer attention to the energy monitoring app now. It helps me run the washing machine and heat-pump dryer while solar production is strong, instead of expecting the battery to cover every load later. That simple habit has probably saved as much as the equipment itself.
For me, the biggest benefit is not complete energy independence. It is using more of my own solar electricity and avoiding the costly evening rates. The battery has made our system feel practical rather than merely impressive on paper.
