I installed my home solar battery last autumn, mainly because our electricity bills jumped whenever the heat pump ran after sunset. The system is a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery connected to my rooftop solar panels, and I chose a lifepo4 ev battery pack style unit because I wanted safety, a long cycle life, and usable capacity rather than the cheapest advertised price.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the panels fill the battery by midafternoon. Instead of sending that energy back to the grid for a small credit, the inverter saves it and discharges during peak-rate hours. I usually run the dishwasher, induction cooktop, and washing machine from stored solar. Before installation, those evening loads cost roughly $4 to $6 per day in winter. Now they are often closer to $1.50, depending on weather and utility rates. My monthly bill has fallen by about $70 to $110, although I am not pretending the battery paid for itself overnight.
One small surprise was the first week of cloudy weather. The battery reached its reserve setting by dinner, then stopped discharging because I had set a conservative 30 percent backup reserve. I initially thought the solar battery was malfunctioning. The app showed the truth: there simply was not enough solar generation. I lowered the reserve to 20 percent after checking the manual, and the system behaved normally. I later raised it again before a forecasted storm.
I like checking the energy-monitoring app with my morning coffee. It shows solar production, battery state of charge, household consumption, and grid import in plain graphs. Winter production is disappointing, but automatic peak shaving has made the investment feel practical. For me, this battery is mainly about using my own solar power when electricity costs the most.
