Solution Solar Battery
Running my home on solar power used to feel like a daily experiment in weather roulette until I added a lithium solar battery last spring. Before that, excess midday energy disappeared into the grid, while my oven, heat pump, and electric car pulled power back in the evening. Now the battery charges from rooftop panels before lunch, and I deliberately run the dishwasher and washing machine then. Once the sun goes down, our lights, refrigerator, and home office draw from stored energy instead of expensive peak electricity. The change is most obvious on my utility bill. Last summer, before storage, I averaged 184 dollars a month. This year, even with similar usage, my bills sit around 112 dollars, though the exact savings vary with cloudy weeks and utility credits.
The setup was less intimidating than expected. My installer mounted the battery in a cool garage corner, added a backup load panel, and paired it with a growatt 40kw inverter. I chose that inverter mainly for its monitoring app and generous capacity, not because my household needs anywhere near forty kilowatts. The electrician spent most of the afternoon checking cable runs, breaker labels, and shutdown procedures. I appreciated that practical explanation.
My favorite feature is the battery’s peak shaving behavior. At five o'clock, it automatically switches from grid import to battery discharge. I can see the little graph in the app, with household demand dropping just as rates climb. On a normal weekday, I use roughly eight to ten kilowatt-hours after sunset. The battery covers nearly all of that, except when we charge the car and cook simultaneously. That is when I notice its limits; it will preserve backup reserve rather than empty itself.
Once the app showed my battery offline after a router update. I rebooted it, and monitoring returned.
