Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 battery in my garage last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. My rooftop solar already covered our daytime use, but the inverter would shut down production once the family returned home and demand climbed. The battery changed that routine immediately: solar charges it after breakfast, then stored energy runs the refrigerator, lights, router, and heat-pump water heater after sunset.
The biggest surprise was seeing the difference on my utility bill. Before storage, our monthly bills averaged around $180 during the hottest months, even with solar. After I programmed the battery to discharge during the utility’s 4-to-9 p.m. peak window, those bills fell to about $70. Results vary with cloudy weather, of course, but avoiding peak rates has mattered more than squeezing every last watt from the panels.
I did have one small troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one evening, even though the monitoring app showed 62 percent charge. I initially blamed the solar battery, but the log showed the inverter had entered its backup reserve setting. I had accidentally set the reserve to 60 percent while testing outage protection. Lowering it to 20 percent restored normal operation, and I now leave 30 percent reserved for emergencies. That simple setting was more useful to understand than any feature list.
For anyone considering lifepo4 diy, my honest advice is to respect the electrical work. I chose a professionally assembled battery cabinet rather than building cells myself, but I still learned the basics of battery management system settings, cable sizing, fuses, and ventilation. The installation took a full Saturday because routing conduit through the garage wall was tedious. Once finished, the system was quiet, and the app made checking state of charge almost addictive.
It feels like savings, not just impressive hardware.
