I installed my home battery last spring to reduce peak-hour purchases. My setup is a 10 kWh DIY solar storage battery built with lifepo4 cells 280ah docan, paired with a 5 kW hybrid inverter and 4.8 kW of rooftop solar. I was nervous about doing the wiring, so I hired an electrician for the final connections, protection devices, and inspection.
The biggest difference appears between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Before the battery, cooking, laundry, and the heat pump all ran on expensive grid power. Now the solar panels charge the battery during the afternoon, and the inverter automatically switches to battery power when peak rates begin. On an average sunny day, I finish the evening with roughly 35 to 45 percent remaining, then recharge the next day. My monthly bill dropped from about $180 to $95, although weather and seasonal heating still make the numbers move around. I am not pretending the battery paid for itself overnight, but the reduction is noticeable every month.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me more than the installation manual did. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging at the scheduled time. The state-of-charge reading looked normal, but the inverter showed “standby.” I eventually found that the time zone had reset. Correcting it restored the discharge schedule immediately. Since then, I check the battery monitoring app once a week rather than obsessively watching it.
The lithium iron phosphate chemistry has also made me feel comfortable indoors; the battery cabinet stays cool and quiet, with no smell or maintenance. I keep a conservative reserve for outages, and during one short blackout it powered the refrigerator, internet router, lights, and a few outlets without drama. For me, the practical win is not energy independence. It is using my solar energy later and avoiding the expensive hours.
