The installation took most of one day. The crew mounted the battery in my garage, next to the inverter, and ran a new cable to the electrical panel. The only surprise was how much space the safety clearance needed.

Before storage, my solar panels exported lots of power at lunchtime, then I bought electricity from the grid between 5 and 9 p.m. Now the battery charges around midday and runs the refrigerator, lights, router, and television through dinner. On cloudy days, the battery usually reaches 35 percent before evening, so I avoid running the dishwasher and clothes dryer together. That habit helps more than I expected.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a power outage, the app showed the battery online, but backup power was not reaching a bedroom circuit. I reset the inverter once and discovered that circuit had been left outside the backup load panel. The installer fixed it remotely the next morning.

Since then, I have treated the battery as a money-saving appliance, not a magic independence machine. For my home, solar battery storage has made evening electricity cheaper and outages less stressful.
