I installed a 10-kWh home battery last spring, mainly because my utility’s evening rates were getting ridiculous. The pack uses lifepo4 cells 280ah, paired with a 5-kW hybrid inverter, and I mounted it in the garage beside my existing solar equipment. I’m not an electrician, so I paid for the final wiring and inspection, but I did the wall mounting and cable labeling myself. The hardest part was honestly finding space without blocking the freezer door.
On sunny days, the panels charge the battery by early afternoon, and the system waits until the expensive period starts at 4 p.m. Before storage, I regularly saw the meter jump when cooking dinner, running the heat pump, and charging an electric car. Now the battery covers most of that window. In a typical month, my electricity bill dropped from about $185 to $105, although weather and driving vary. That roughly $80 saving matters more to me than the app’s impressive graphs. I usually finish the night with 20 to 30 percent remaining, which leaves a sensible reserve for an outage.
The one moment that made me nervous came during a three-day stretch of rain. The battery stopped discharging at midnight, even though the app showed 62 percent. I checked the obvious things first: backup mode, time-of-use schedule, and the inverter’s warning screen. Nothing looked wrong. Cycling the inverter’s battery breaker brought it back, but I still called the installer. They found a communication cable that had loosened slightly behind the inverter and secured it. Since then, I’ve added a quick monthly check of the terminals and kept a printed shutdown procedure near the panel. I appreciate that the battery has a quiet fan and makes no noticeable noise from the living room, but I also learned not to treat monitoring software as unquestionable or perfect.
