8 months ago, I added a 10 kWh LiFePO4 battery to my rooftop solar system, mostly to avoid buying electricity during our utility’s expensive evening window. I was tired of watching the inverter export cheap midday solar power while the house later pulled energy from the grid at nearly three times the rate.
The difference showed up on the first full billing cycle. Before the battery, our summer bills averaged around $185. After changing the settings so the solar battery charged from excess daytime production and discharged between 4 and 9 p.m., the bill dropped to $112. We still use the air conditioner heavily, so I was honestly surprised by the savings. On cloudy days, the battery usually carries the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and television through the evening, although I let the grid handle the air conditioner startup surge.
Setup was easier than I expected, but I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped charging at 92% for two days. I initially blamed the solar panels, but the monitoring app showed normal production. I eventually found that the battery management system had entered a protective state after an unusually cold night. After checking the manual, I restarted the system and adjusted the low-temperature charging setting. It has worked normally since then.
I also bought a compatible 48v lifepo4 lithium battery charger for occasional maintenance charging and emergencies. I have only used it once, during a long stretch of rain, but it was reassuring to have that option.
What I appreciate most is not complete energy independence. It is the predictable evening coverage and the quieter feeling of using stored solar power instead of watching peak-hour rates climb. The battery has also kept our essentials running during two brief outages. I still check the state of charge and solar battery app weekly, but day-to-day operation has been pleasantly boring—which, for home energy equipment, feels like a success.
