I installed my solar battery storage system last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity during the evening peak. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but I was still sending surplus power to the grid and pulling it back after dinner. The installer paired a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with a hybrid inverter. The setup took most of one afternoon. The electrician added a dedicated breaker, connected the battery to the inverter, and configured reserve capacity at 20 percent. I appreciated that the monitoring app showed solar generation, household load, battery state of charge, and grid import on one screen, although its graphs occasionally update slowly.
My biggest surprise came from peak-hour savings. Before storage, our evening electricity use regularly pushed the bill higher, especially when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and charging devices at once. Now, the battery charges from midday solar production and discharges from about 4 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny days, I often reach bedtime with 35–45 percent remaining.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $180 to $105 in the first full month, though weather and utility rates make the comparison imperfect. The battery does not eliminate the bill, but shifting consumption away from peak rates is what I notice most.
One evening, the system stopped discharging at 62 percent. The app showed no obvious warning, so I checked the inverter and found it had switched to backup-only mode after a brief grid flicker. Toggling the operating mode restored normal operation. Now, mode stays automatic.
