Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed a 10 kWh home battery beside my inverter last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive electricity after dinner. My rooftop solar had been exporting plenty during the afternoon, yet our family still used power when rates were highest. I chose lifepo4 batteries because the chemistry seemed safer for an indoor utility room and the cycle life was reassuring. The installer finished in one day, although configuring the monitoring app took longer than expected.
The biggest change is how predictable our evening electricity has become. On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent by midafternoon. At 5 p.m., it automatically switches from solar charging to home supply, carrying the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and dishwasher through the peak period. Before storage, those hours added roughly $4 to $6 per day in summer. Now that amount is usually closer to 50 cents, mostly because the battery does not cover every appliance.
The savings are not theoretical on my bill. Over the first four months, my monthly charge fell from about $185 to $112, despite running the air conditioner more often. The result depends on weather and our habits, but shifting solar energy into the evening has mattered more than I expected. I like seeing the battery reserve on the app; I keep a 20 percent backup setting, so an outage does not leave us without power.
My only annoyance was a warning last month saying the battery was offline. The system powered the house but stopped updating in the app. I checked the Ethernet cable, rebooted the gateway, and waited an hour. Nothing changed. The installer reset the communications module and readings returned. It was a software hiccup, not a battery failure. Since then, monitoring has been stable. That incident increased my confidence because support answered quickly and explained the fix clearly.
