Early last summer I installed a 10-kWh home battery beside my rooftop solar system, and the difference showed up immediately. During sunny afternoons, I stopped sending so much excess power back to the grid. Instead, the battery charged until evening, when our lights, refrigerator, induction cooker, and heat-pump water heater were running. Before storage, my family regularly hit peak rates between 4:30 and 9 p.m.
My installer recommended a Deye hybrid inverter, and I specifically checked that the deye manufacturer documentation supported the battery chemistry and local grid settings. Setup was less dramatic than I expected: the electrician mounted the inverter, connected the battery, and configured a 20 percent reserve in one afternoon. I spent the next week watching the monitoring app obsessively, comparing solar production, battery state of charge, and household demand. The numbers were surprisingly reassuring, especially after sunset.
The best change is peak-hour bill savings. On clear days, the battery carries almost the evening load; on cloudy days, it still handles dinner and part of the night. My monthly bill fell from about $210 to $125, although weather and utility credits make comparisons imperfect. I do not pretend the battery pays for itself overnight, but seeing less grid electricity on every statement makes the investment feel worthwhile. We also shifted the dishwasher and laundry to midday, so solar self-consumption is higher than before.
One brief outage exposed a setup issue: the battery did not power the house because the backup-output breaker had tripped during commissioning. My installer guided me through a reset, and I tested the circuit with mains disconnected. Since then, it has switched over cleanly twice. I keep only essential circuits—refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and garage door. I check the app weekly and clean inverter vents. Reliable evening discharge matters most to me.
