Nearly six months ago, I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to the solar system on my roof, mainly because our evening electricity use was getting expensive. We have a small house, a heat-pump water heater, refrigerator, induction cooktop, and two teenagers who seem determined to shower and cook between 5 and 9 p.m. Before the battery, that window pushed our monthly bill noticeably higher, even though the panels produced plenty during the day.
The setup was less intimidating than I expected. The installer mounted the battery in the garage, connected it to a hybrid inverter, and programmed it to charge from solar first, then discharge during our utility’s peak period. I did ask whether an inverter 12v 230v setup would be enough for our needs, but the final installation uses a higher-voltage battery bank; that conversation helped me understand that “12v” products are better suited to smaller backup jobs, not running an entire household overnight.
The biggest difference appears on the bill, not in some dramatic gadget moment. Our first full month with the battery was $68 lower than the same month the previous year, despite similar weather and a small rate increase. In the following month, we saved about $74. The battery usually reaches 100 percent by early afternoon, then carries the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, and cooking load after sunset. I especially like seeing the app show grid consumption staying close to zero through dinner. It feels satisfying to use electricity we generated instead of sending cheap midday solar power away and buying it back at the evening rate.
A small January hiccup was a changed reserve setting after a firmware update. Support walked me through restoring it in the app, and the battery immediately stopped dipping too low overnight. That was reassuring for our family too.
