Every evening after dinner, I check my solar battery app before switching on the kettle. Since installing my kepworth battery last spring, this habit has become satisfying. Rather than sending midday solar to the grid, I see the battery reach 100 percent by mid-afternoon. It carries our house through expensive evening peak rates.

The difference shows up clearly on our bill. Before the battery, our monthly summer electricity bill hovered around $180. Over the past three comparable months, it has averaged $82. I am not pretending the system eliminated every charge: cloudy weeks still mean more grid electricity, and the utility keeps its fixed connection fee. Still, saving close to $100 a month feels like a genuine change, especially because our usage habits have not changed much.

My favorite feature is the battery's reserve setting. I keep 25 percent in reserve for outages, rather than draining everything during peak hours. We have had two outages since installation, and each time the lights, refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and outlets stayed running. It was not enough to power the oven or air-conditioning, but it kept the house comfortable and prevented the usual scramble for flashlights.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. The app showed the battery at 18 percent one morning, even though the weather forecast promised sunshine. I checked the inverter and found the solar input breaker had tripped after a storm. Resetting it restored charging within a few minutes. I check that breaker after rain, but I have not needed a service call.

For me, the value is not just backup power. The combination of solar panels, battery storage, time-of-use control, and sensible reserve capacity makes our electricity costs predictable. I watch the app because it is satisfying to see daytime sunshine doing useful work after sunset, too.
