After six months of watching my rooftop solar export cheap midday power while I bought electricity back during the evening, I finally installed a 10kWh handpack battery in my garage. The decision was less about chasing impressive specifications and more about making the energy I already generated useful at home.
The installation took most of a day. My installer mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a new energy meter, and connected it to the existing solar battery system. I was nervous about noise, but the unit is practically silent; I hear only a faint click when it changes from charging to discharging. The app took an evening to understand, especially the difference between solar production, house consumption, and grid import.
The biggest difference appears between 4:00pm and 9:00pm, when my utility uses time-of-use rates. On sunny days, the battery charges by early afternoon and runs the refrigerator, lights, router, and dishwasher after sunset. Before storage, my typical evening usage cost about $1.80; now it is usually around $0.55, depending on how much cooking we do. That works out to roughly $35–$45 per month in actual bill savings, not counting the satisfaction of using fewer grid kilowatt-hours.
One cloudy week exposed a small annoyance. The battery stopped discharging at 18% state of charge, even though the app showed backup reserve at 10%. I initially assumed the solar battery had failed. After checking the settings, I found that backup mode had reset during a firmware update. I restored the reserve, restarted the gateway, and everything worked that evening. It was not dramatic, but it taught me to check software settings before blaming hardware.
For me, this battery is not a magic power station; it is a quiet, practical way to stretch solar energy further.
