I installed a 5kWh solar battery last spring, mainly to reduce how much electricity I bought from the grid during our expensive evening hours. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime usage, but after dinner the house would switch to grid power just when rates climbed.
I chose a 48V lithium battery built with lifepo4 280ah cells, plus a hybrid inverter and a simple battery management system (BMS). The installer finished in one day. I appreciated that they programmed a 20% reserve, so I would still have backup power during an outage instead of completely draining the pack.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 and 9 p.m. Previously, our air conditioner, induction cooker, and water heater pushed us into the peak tariff. Now the solar panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the inverter feeds those loads after sunset. My utility bills dropped from roughly $185 to $112 per month over the first three billing cycles. That is about $73 saved monthly, though I know winter will be less impressive. The app shows battery state of charge and daily solar production, but I trust the utility meter more than the colorful estimates.
I did have one small scare during the second week. The battery stopped discharging at 41%, even though the app showed no fault. After checking the settings, I found the inverter had switched into a conservative backup mode after a brief grid flicker. I reset that mode, watched the voltage for an hour, and normal discharge returned. Customer support confirmed it was a protection setting, not a failed cell.
Since then, the system has quietly run every day. I no longer think about it much, which is exactly what I wanted from home energy storage: fewer peak-rate surprises, steadier solar self-consumption, and backup when the neighborhood loses power.
