I installed a solar battery last spring, mainly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. My rooftop panels already covered much of our daytime use, but without storage we were still buying power from the grid between five and nine every night. The installer fitted a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery in the garage, built around a lifepo4 100ah cell configuration. I chose that size after watching our usage for a few weeks, rather than paying for a huge system I would rarely fill.
The first week was surprisingly simple. During sunny afternoons, the panels charged the battery to 100%, and the inverter automatically held that energy until the expensive period started. By bedtime, we usually had enough stored to run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, television, and sometimes the washing machine. Our evening grid consumption dropped from roughly 8kWh to under 1kWh. On the first full billing cycle, our electricity bill fell by about $42, which was more noticeable than I expected. It was not magic savings; the battery simply stopped us buying those costly peak kilowatt-hours.
A small issue appeared in November. After several cloudy days, the battery reached its reserve level earlier than usual, and the app showed a warning about low solar input. I initially assumed the battery had failed, but the panels were simply producing very little. I cleaned a thin layer of dust from the lower roof panels and raised the backup reserve from 15% to 25%. The warning disappeared the next afternoon.
Since then, I check the monitoring app every few days, not obsessively. The battery has remained quiet, with no fan noise, and it carries our evening loads reliably. I still use grid power during rain, but that feels like backup planning rather than a failure. The monthly bill savings feel genuinely real now.
