I installed my home solar battery last spring, mainly because our electricity bills jumped whenever the heat pump ran after sunset.
The system is a 10 kWh lifeso4 battery paired with our existing rooftop solar panels and a hybrid inverter. Installation was less dramatic than I expected: an electrician mounted the battery in the garage, connected the battery management system, and configured it to charge from solar first. We chose time-of-use control so it would fill during the middle of the day and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
That schedule has been the biggest practical win. On sunny days the battery usually reaches 100 percent by about 2 p.m., then carries our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, heat-pump controls, and cooking load through dinner. Before the battery, we routinely pulled expensive grid power while making dinner, and our evening usage was painfully visible on the utility app.
Now the inverter quietly switches to stored energy when the peak rate begins. My monthly bill is not zero, but it has dropped by roughly 30 to 40 percent in the months when we use the heat pump heavily. In dollar terms, that has meant saving around $45 to $70 per month.
I also appreciate that the battery keeps a little reserve instead of draining completely, so short outages do not interrupt our internet or lights.
The only hiccup came during a firmware update. One morning the monitoring app showed the battery at 0 percent even though the panels were producing. I checked the inverter display and found it waiting for a software reboot. After restarting it and leaving the system off for ten minutes, the charge reading returned to normal. Support later confirmed it was only a display-sync issue, not lost capacity. That reassurance made the scare easy to forgive quickly.
