Solution Solar Battery
I installed a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) battery in my garage last spring, mostly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid. Before this, my rooftop solar panels produced plenty during the day, but we sent much of that power back to the utility for a poor credit.
I wanted a simple solar battery setup: charge from solar after breakfast, then run the refrigerator, lights, internet equipment, and heat-pump water heater after sunset.
The installer mounted the inverter beside the battery and connected it to a small backup panel. Setup took most of a day. The only mildly frustrating part was waiting for utility approval and learning the app. Its graphs looked impressive, although I quickly learned that household loads matter more than colorful charts.
By shifting dishwasher and laundry into sunny hours, I usually finish the day with 70 to 90 percent battery charge. During peak pricing, the battery carries our evening load until about 10 p.m. That change reduced my monthly bill from roughly $180 to $105 over the first three summer months. It is not a dramatic off-grid transformation, but saving $75 monthly feels very, especially since our air conditioner runs hard in July.
One evening the app showed the battery at 18 percent even though the forecast promised sun. I discovered a tripped breaker for the garage circuit, reset it, and watched charging resume normally. That small troubleshooting moment taught me not to panic at every warning notification. I also keep the critical-load list conservative; the battery backs up lights and refrigeration, not the whole house.
While researching battery chemistry, I came across the exact phrase "li socl2", which refers to lithium-thionyl chloride cells, not the rechargeable home storage battery I use. That distinction matters when comparing solar battery products online.
