Most evenings, after dinner, I glance at the battery app before switching on the kettle or dishwasher. I installed a 10-kWh LiFePO4 solar battery last spring, connected to my rooftop solar inverter, and the biggest difference has been how little electricity I buy between 4:00-9:00 p.m.

Before storage, my panels produced plenty during the day, but I still paid expensive peak rates after sunset. Now the battery charges from midday solar and carries the house through dinner, lights, Wi-Fi, refrigerator, and heat-pump cycling. On clear days, I reach bedtime with around 25% remaining; on cloudy days, I set the backup reserve closer to 40%. My monthly bill dropped from roughly $165 to $95-110, depending on weather.

The savings are not dramatic every month, but they feel real because peak-hour consumption has almost disappeared. I also appreciate LiFePO4; it feels less nerve-racking than the old lead-acid backup unit I once used. The monitoring screen shows state of charge, input power, output power, and temperature.

My only hiccup happened during a hot week. The inverter stopped accepting charge at noon, even though sunlight was strong. I found a warning about battery temperature and called the installer.
