Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I installed my solar battery last spring after getting tired of sending cheap daytime solar power back to the grid and buying it back during expensive evening hours. My setup is fairly simple: rooftop solar panels, a hybrid inverter, and a 10 kWh home energy storage battery. The battery brand uses the phrase “li fe akku” in its documentation, which I learned refers to the lithium iron phosphate chemistry. I chose it mainly for the safety reputation and expected cycle life.
The biggest difference shows up between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. Before the battery, my family cooked dinner, ran the dishwasher, and watched television while drawing power from the grid. Now the battery usually covers those loads after the panels stop producing. On sunny days, it reaches full charge by early afternoon. During the evening, I can see the charge level slowly fall as the refrigerator, heat pump, lights, and induction stove run.
My electricity bill dropped by roughly 30 percent in the first full month, although the exact savings depend heavily on weather and utility rates. I was surprised that shifting only a few household habits made such a noticeable difference. We run laundry and the dishwasher around lunchtime when possible, leaving more stored energy for the evening peak period.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one night even though it showed plenty of charge. I checked the monitoring app and found that a backup reserve setting had accidentally been raised to 40 percent during a software update. Lowering it to 15 percent restored normal operation.
So far, the solar battery has worked quietly in the background, which is exactly what I wanted. It has not eliminated my electric bill, but it has made our solar power much more useful and our monthly costs more predictable.
