Nearly two years ago I added a 10 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery to my rooftop solar system, and the biggest difference showed up after sunset, not during installation. Before the battery, my panels produced plenty of energy but I still bought electricity every evening. Now the battery charges through the afternoon and runs the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat-pump water heater through most of the night.
Installer mounted the inverter in my garage and explained the app.
The clearest financial win is peak-hour use. Our utility charges more between 4 and 9 p.m., exactly when our household starts cooking, runs the dishwasher, and settles in for television. Previously, those hours pushed our daily consumption into the expensive tier. With the solar battery, the app shows discharge beginning around 4:30 p.m. On sunny days, it covers nearly everything until bedtime.
My bill fell from roughly $185 to $112 per month over the summer, despite using the air conditioner about the same amount. That is not a dramatic zero-dollar bill, but saving around $70 monthly feels very real to me. Winter savings are smaller because short days leave less solar energy for charging, and the heat pump draws more overnight.
I did have one minor scare: the battery stopped discharging during a hot afternoon. The app showed a temperature warning, so I cleared leaves blocking the garage vent and waited. It resumed normally after cooling down. That small incident reminded me that storage is helpful hardware, not magic. I now check the battery temperature and state of charge once a week.
For my household, the best part is predictable evening power, not chasing total energy independence. The panels make electricity, the battery shifts it, and the inverter quietly handles the handoff. After two years, that routine feels ordinary—which is exactly what I wanted.
