Solution Solar Battery
For me, the biggest change after installing my home solar battery was not seeing the panels produce power; it was watching my evening electricity use without immediately buying expensive grid power.
Before storage, our rooftop solar system exported plenty during the sunny afternoon, then pulled energy back from the utility after dinner. That timing was especially frustrating in summer, when air-conditioning ran during peak hours.
I chose a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery using lfp cylindrical cells because I wanted something designed for daily cycling, rather than chasing the largest possible capacity. My favorite feature is the scheduled discharge. I set the battery to charge from excess midday solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. When the dishwasher, induction cooker, and heat pump overlap, the battery supplies most of that load.
My first full month showed a noticeably lower bill: peak grid consumption fell from roughly 11 kWh per day to 2 or 3. Savings vary with weather and rates, but the battery has reduced our monthly bill by about $45 to $70 during the warmer months. That feels more useful than a theoretical efficiency number.
I did have one small scare. After a brief outage, the monitoring app reported “backup unavailable” even though the battery was nearly full. I checked the breaker and found the backup circuit switch had tripped. Resetting it restored power in under a minute, but I later asked the installer to adjust the transfer settings. Since then, it has handled two short outages without drama.
I still check the state of charge every few days, especially before storms. For me, the best evidence is simple: I now use more of my own solar energy, buy less during the expensive hours, and think less about when the washing machine runs. That peace of mind matters.
