2 a.m. was the first time I really appreciated my solar battery. During a summer heatwave, our grid-tied solar panels still produced plenty at noon, but our electricity use peaked after dinner, when the sun had gone down. I installed a 12v battery lithium 150ah unit in a small insulated cupboard beside the inverter, and that evening it quietly carried the fridge, lights, Wi-Fi router, and circulation fan.
That sounds ordinary, but seeing the battery monitor show almost no grid draw at 8 p.m. felt surprisingly satisfying. Before storage, those same appliances pulled expensive peak-hour electricity from the utility. My evening rate is nearly twice my overnight rate, so the change was noticeable on the first full bill. I saved roughly $18 that month, not a dramatic marketing number, but a real reduction I could connect to the battery storage system.
The setup was not completely painless. My installer had to adjust the charge settings because the first default profile kept charging from the grid after cloudy afternoons. Once I selected solar priority and set a reserve of 25 percent, the behavior made much more sense. The lithium battery usually reaches full by early afternoon, then discharges through my evening peak until the reserve kicks in.
I like keeping that reserve because a brief outage last winter proved the practical value of backup power. The lights stayed on, the router never dropped, and the freezer did not warm up while the neighborhood waited for service.
My only troubleshooting moment came after I noticed the battery state of charge falling faster than usual. A loose communication cable was showing stale readings in the monitoring app; reseating it fixed the issue immediately. Since then, I check the app once in the morning, mostly to spot unusual solar charging or overnight drain patterns.
