After living with rooftop solar for two years, I finally added a 10kWh home battery last spring, and the difference has been most noticeable after sunset. Before the battery, my panels exported cheap daytime power while I bought electricity back during dinner and evening peak hours. That felt wasteful, especially when the air conditioner was running and the kids were showering.
Installation was less dramatic than I expected. The installer mounted the battery beside my garage wall, connected it to the existing solar inverter, and set the system to charge from excess solar first. I had searched for a jaycar inverter while comparing options, but eventually chose a battery compatible with my current equipment rather than replacing everything. That decision saved money and kept the project manageable.
On sunny days, the battery usually reaches full charge around lunchtime. At about 4 pm, it switches to battery power automatically. I can see this in the monitoring app, although I admit I check it more often than necessary. Our evening consumption averages roughly 7kWh, so the battery covers most of dinner, lighting, television, and overnight refrigeration before the grid takes over near breakfast.
The clearest change is on my electricity bill. Before storage, I was paying around $280 monthly in summer. Since adding the battery, similar weather has produced bills between $145 and $175. That is not a perfect comparison—our usage changes—but peak-hour imports have nearly disappeared. The solar battery is not free, and I am still calculating the payback period, but the immediate monthly savings are real enough to notice.
My hiccup came during a cloudy week when the battery stopped discharging at night. The app showed a reserve setting I had accidentally raised to 50 percent. Lowering it to 20 percent fixed the issue. Since then, the storage system has done its job nightly.
