Every evening, I used to watch my electricity meter climb when the air conditioner started after dinner. Since installing a 10kWh solar battery with a LiFePO4 (celula lifepo4) pack last summer, I have changed that habit.
My rooftop solar system usually fills the battery by early afternoon. Instead of sending all the extra power back to the grid, I keep it stored and set the inverter to discharge between 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. Those five hours are when my utility’s time-of-use rate is highest. I now run the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and most of the cooling from battery power. On a clear day, this cuts roughly 8–11 kWh from peak consumption. My monthly bill fell from about $142 to $86 in summer, although the saving depends on weather and the fixed charges.
The most useful surprise has been how quiet the system is. The battery sits in a utility closet, and I only hear an inverter fan when it is working hard. I did have one troubleshooting moment in August. The battery stopped discharging at sunset, even though the monitoring app showed plenty of stored energy. I found that a firmware update had reset the discharge schedule to “self-consumption” mode. After restoring the peak-hour time window and rebooting the hybrid inverter, the system worked normally again.
That hiccup taught me not to rely completely on automation. I check the state of charge once a week, especially before a heatwave or storm. I also leave about 20% battery reserve for outages rather than chasing every dollar of savings. During a recent evening blackout, the battery kept our lights, router, and refrigerator running for nearly six hours, which felt more valuable than the bill reduction alone.
