Nearly six months ago I added a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery to my rooftop system, mostly because our evening electricity rates had become ridiculous. I wanted to use more of my own solar power instead of sending it back to the grid for a small credit. The installation was less dramatic than I expected: a licensed electrician mounted the battery in my garage, connected it to the inverter, and configured the app in one afternoon.
The first week was mostly about watching numbers. On sunny days, the battery reached 100 percent before lunch, then carried our refrigerator, Wi-Fi, lights, and heat pump through the evening. I changed the operating mode to reserve 20 percent, so we still have backup during an outage. That reserve has already proved useful twice when storms caused grid interruptions. I barely noticed the change; our lights flickered, but the router stayed online.
The biggest difference shows up on peak-rate nights. Before the battery, my household often used grid power from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., exactly when electricity cost the most. Now the battery usually covers that window. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly $45–$70, depending on weather and heating demand. It is not a magical zero-dollar bill, but the savings feel real, especially when I compare the utility statement with last year's numbers.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a software update, the monitoring app showed the battery at 0% even though the inverter display said 62%. I did not panic; I checked the cables, restarted the gateway, and waited about ten minutes. The readings eventually matched. Customer support confirmed it was a display synchronization issue, not a charging problem. Since then, I have kept firmware updates disabled until I can do them when home.
