I installed a 10-kWh lipo4 solar battery last spring, mainly because our electricity bill jumped during evening peak hours. The installation itself was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter in the garage, ran a new critical-loads panel, and had everything commissioned in one afternoon. I did spend the evening watching the monitoring app, though.

The biggest difference has been how we use solar power after sunset. During the day, our rooftop panels usually produce more electricity than we need, so the battery charges instead of sending all that extra energy back to the grid. Around 4 p.m., it starts covering the house as rates rise. By dinner time, the battery is running the refrigerator, lights, Wi-Fi, television, and sometimes the heat pump. We still import a little power overnight, but our peak-hour consumption has dropped dramatically.

Our monthly bill used to be around $180 in the warmer months. Since adding the energy storage system, it has usually landed between $95 and $120, depending on weather and air-conditioning use. That is not a perfect payback story, but seeing the battery discharge while the utility rate is highest feels genuinely satisfying. I also like having backup power for short outages. The switchover is quick enough that our internet router and lights stay on, although I have not tested it with every appliance at once.

The only minor issue happened during a cloudy week when the battery reached its reserve setting earlier than expected. I initially thought the solar battery was malfunctioning, but the app showed that several unusually cold nights had increased our heating load. I raised the reserve slightly and adjusted the heating schedule. Since then, the system has been predictable and quiet. For me, the real benefit is not just backup power; it is using more of my own solar electricity and avoiding the most expensive evening rates.
