Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Nights became noticeably quieter on my electricity bill after I added a 5 kWh lithium battery to my rooftop solar setup. I live in a small, two-bedroom house, and before the battery, my panels exported most of their afternoon production while I bought power back from the grid during the expensive evening period. That always felt wasteful.
My system uses an inverter growatt 3kw, ten 400-watt solar panels, and a wall-mounted battery. The installation itself was less disruptive than I expected. The installer finished in one day, although I spent another evening learning the monitoring app and figuring out what all the battery state-of-charge numbers meant. I set the battery to charge from solar and discharge between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when our utility rates are highest.
That schedule has made the biggest practical difference. We usually run the oven, television, lights, and sometimes the washing machine after sunset, and the battery now covers most of that usage. On sunny days, it reaches 100 percent by mid-afternoon. During the evening, it commonly drops to around 25 percent before the system switches back to grid power. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 30 to 40 percent, depending on weather and how much air-conditioning we use. I am not completely off-grid, but my solar self-consumption is much higher.
My hiccup was a communication error between the inverter and battery after a firmware update. The battery worked, but the app showed stale data. Power-cycling the communication cable did nothing, so I called the installer. They reset the connection remotely, and it is stable.
What I appreciate most is predictability. I check the battery level, but no longer obsess over clouds. The system quietly uses stored solar energy when electricity costs the most, which makes the investment feel practical rather than futuristic.
