Running our solar battery through a full summer has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed the system last year with a growatt 5kw 3 phase inverter and a 10kWh lithium battery, mainly to avoid buying expensive power in the evening. I was less interested in becoming completely off-grid than in making our existing rooftop solar work harder.
The biggest difference appears between 4pm and 9pm. Before the battery, our cooking, heat-pump, lights, and hot-water use all landed in the utility’s peak period. Now the battery stores surplus solar during the middle of the day and supplies most of that evening load. On clear days, it is usually around 70–85% full when we get home, and it often reaches its reserve setting before sunrise. Our monthly bill has fallen from roughly $180 to $75–90, depending on weather and heating use. That is not a magic zero bill, but the savings are very noticeable.
I did have one slightly frustrating week when the battery stopped discharging overnight. The inverter app showed normal solar production, but the battery state of charge stayed frozen. I power-cycled the system following the installer’s instructions, checked that the backup reserve had not been accidentally set to 100%, and updated the monitoring app. The problem turned out to be a communication hiccup between the battery management system and inverter. After the reset, discharge resumed normally.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the solar energy storage system now; I just check the app every few days. The battery has not eliminated every grid charge, especially after several cloudy days, but it has made our energy use more predictable. For me, that practical consistency matters more than impressive independence percentages. That makes the investment feel worthwhile during ordinary family life.
