Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
I finally installed a lifepo4 10kwh battery in my garage last spring, and the biggest surprise was how quickly it changed my evening routine. Instead of checking the utility meter nervously, I started checking charge levels.
My installer mounted it beside the inverter and added a monitoring app. The setup took most of one afternoon, although I spent extra time labeling the breaker panel so I could understand backup circuits during an outage.
I chose the battery mainly to avoid expensive peak-hour electricity. My utility charges more from four to nine in the evening, exactly when we cook, run the dishwasher, and use air conditioning. Before storage, I regularly watched usage climb during those hours.
Now solar panels fill the battery through late morning. By four o'clock, it is usually near full, so the house runs from stored energy instead of grid power. On sunny days, I often reach bedtime with 20–30% remaining.
That shift has made the clearest difference on my bill. My monthly summer bills fell from roughly $210 to $125, though weather and rates vary. I am not claiming the battery erased my bill; it simply moved consumption away from the utility's costly window.
The app estimates my self-consumption at around 80%, compared with about 35% before. I like seeing the daily graph because it makes the savings feel tangible. A full charge is worth more to me than a dramatic peak output number I will never use.
One minor hiccup came after a firmware update: the battery stopped charging at 62% although the panels were producing. I restored the solar-priority setting in the app and it worked normally the next day. Now I check temperature and alerts weekly but otherwise leave automation alone. The dependable backup keeps my refrigerator, Wi-Fi, and lights running during outages.
