Nearly six months ago, I installed a home battery after watching my summer electricity bills climb. My setup is a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery paired with rooftop panels and an inverter for home. I did not choose the largest system, because our goal was simple: store daytime solar and use it during expensive evening hours.
Installation took most of a Saturday. The electrician mounted the battery in our garage, ran new conduit, and connected the monitoring app. The only surprise was how much time the app needed to learn our usage pattern. For the first week, it predicted poorly and discharged before dinner. After a firmware update and a few settings changes, it now reserves 25% backup capacity and sends the rest to the house between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m.
That change has made the biggest practical difference. Before the battery, our air conditioner, dishwasher, and induction cooktop all ran on pricey grid electricity after sunset. In July, we used about 11 kWh nightly from stored energy instead. Our bill fell from roughly $186 to $112, despite similar weather and household routines. The exact savings vary with cloudy days, but seeing the battery charge from free solar and carry us through peak rates feels genuinely satisfying.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. One morning, the app showed the battery at 3% even though the panels had produced plenty the previous afternoon. I checked the system and found the backup reserve accidentally set to zero after an app update. Restoring the 25% reserve fixed it immediately; the battery began charging normally at noon. That was a useful reminder that monitoring matters more than simply installing equipment.
We have not expanded yet, although the inverter can handle another battery module. For now, I am happy with quieter evenings, steadier bills.
