Hanging our solar battery on the garage wall has changed how we use electricity. Before installing it, our rooftop panels sent surplus power straight to the grid during the afternoon, while we bought expensive electricity after dinner. Now the battery storage system charges before lunch and discharges from 4:00 p.m. until bedtime. That simple shift has made the biggest difference on our time-of-use bill.

My system is modest: a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, a hybrid inverter, and eight kilowatts of solar panels. I did not buy it to chase energy independence; I wanted to stop paying peak rates for cooking, laundry, and our evening heat pump. Over the first month, our bill fell from about $180 to $92, despite weather and usage. The savings are not identical every month, but seeing the battery cover the 5-9 p.m. window feels satisfying.

The only hiccup happened during a cloudy week. My inverter app showed the battery at 100 percent, yet the house was importing power. I restarted the inverter, checked the breaker, and discovered a loose communications cable behind the unit. Once reseated, discharge resumed normally. I also learned not to obsess over the app: the battery sometimes waits for a reserve level or follows a backup setting I had forgotten.

A practical note: I asked the installer about using the battery with a future EV charger and even mentioned chademo, since an older electric car occasionally visits us. They explained that vehicle-to-home charging would need compatible hardware and is not automatic. For now, I keep the battery focused on the house. It runs lights, refrigeration, and evening appliances, which is exactly the kind of boring reliability I wanted.
