2,400 watts of rooftop solar finally felt useful after I added a home battery last spring. Before that, my panels exported most of their best afternoon production, while our house pulled expensive electricity back from the grid after dinner. The battery changed that pattern immediately, even though the installation was not completely painless.

I chose a 320ah lithium iron phosphate battery because I wanted usable capacity rather than a flashy app. The installer mounted it in the garage, connected it to my hybrid inverter, and set a reserve of 20 percent. That reserve matters during outages, but it also means I cannot treat every advertised kilowatt-hour as available.

The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. On sunny days, the panels charge the battery to full by midafternoon. When cooking, running the dishwasher, and using the heat pump later, the inverter feeds those loads from stored solar instead of peak-rate grid power. My evening import dropped from roughly 8 kilowatt-hours to 1 or 2.

That change is visible on my utility bill, not just on a monitoring screen. Before storage, our summer bills averaged about $185. After adding the battery, they have landed near $115, despite similar air-conditioning use. The battery did not eliminate the bill, since winter production is lower and the fixed charges remain, but shaving the expensive hours made the monthly payment noticeably less painful.

I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. For three evenings, the battery stopped discharging at 40 percent, even though the app showed plenty of energy. I checked the inverter warning history and found a grid-voltage protection event. After the utility voltage settled, I restarted the inverter once; normal discharge returned. Support confirmed the setting was intentionally conservative, which reassured me more than it annoyed me.

Now I recommend it strongly.
