Running our home on solar power felt good, but adding battery storage made a much bigger difference to our daily routine. After we had our panels installed for a year, I noticed that most of our electricity use happened after sunset. Cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and using the heat pump during peak hours were quietly pushing our evening bill higher. I decided to add a battery system with a growatt xh hybrid inverter instead of installing more panels.
The biggest improvement has been the shift in when we buy power. During sunny afternoons, the solar panels now run the house and charge the battery. Once the sun goes down, the battery supplies power until late evening. Our energy provider has time-of-use rates, so this has reduced the amount of expensive grid electricity we use. In an average month, our bill dropped by roughly 25 to 35 percent compared with the same months before the battery. The exact saving changes with weather, heating, and how much we cook, but the difference is easy to see.
I did have one mildly frustrating troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging for an evening even though it showed a healthy charge level. I checked the monitoring app, restarted the inverter according to the manual, and discovered that the operating schedule had reset to a conservative setting. Once I restored the evening discharge window, everything worked normally again. It was not a serious fault, but it reminded me that battery systems are not completely “set and forget.”
What I appreciate most is the quiet, automatic operation. I rarely think about the solar battery during the day, yet I can see the self-consumption rate improving in the app. We still draw from the grid in winter and during long cloudy spells, but our home now uses far more of its own solar energy, especially during the costly evening hours.
