Solution Solar Battery DIY Parts
Running our home on solar felt straightforward until I started watching the evening electricity rates. We installed a Growatt battery storage system last spring alongside our rooftop panels, and the biggest difference has been using stored solar power during peak hours instead of sending everything back to the grid.
Before the battery, our dishwasher, induction hob, and heat pump often ran after dinner, exactly when prices were highest. Now I set the battery to charge from surplus solar during the day and discharge from 4:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. On a normal sunny weekday, it covers nearly all our evening load. My monthly bill has fallen by roughly 25 to 35 percent, depending on weather and how much cooking we do. That is more noticeable than the headline battery capacity because we are avoiding expensive grid electricity, rather than merely producing more solar.
The app is useful, although I still check the physical inverter occasionally. One evening the battery stopped discharging at 18 percent. I initially thought something had failed, but the backup reserve setting had been raised accidentally during a firmware update. I found the setting after comparing screenshots and support notes on the growatt website, then restored the reserve to 10 percent. It resumed discharging that night.
I have not added another battery yet, but the modular design makes expansion tempting. For now, the system gives us quieter evenings and much less anxiety about rate spikes. The main lesson is simple: battery storage savings depend on timing, daily consumption, and sensible settings, not just the number printed on the box. I also keep battery area clear and check the cables after severe storms.
