Running our home battery through its first summer has changed how I think about solar power. We already had rooftop panels, but before adding storage, I watched cheap daytime generation disappear back to the grid while we paid more in the evening.

I chose a 10kWh lithium iron phosphate battery marketed as a growatt solar inverter compatible battery because it matched my existing inverter and did not require replacing the whole system. The installer mounted it in the garage, connected the battery backup circuit to the refrigerator, router, lights, and a few outlets, and showed me the monitoring app. Setup took most of a day. The only annoyance was waiting for the utility approval to enable export settings; the battery itself started charging that afternoon.

The most noticeable difference is during peak-hour use. I set the battery to charge from excess solar and discharge after 4 p.m. By dinner time, our oven, dishwasher, and air conditioner are mostly running from stored energy instead of grid power. In the first full month, my electric bill fell from about $214 to $137. That is not a dramatic year-round guarantee—winter will be different—but seeing roughly $77 disappear in one month made the investment feel practical. I also like that the solar battery keeps the fridge and internet alive during short outages, even if the outage happens after sunset.

I did have one troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, the app showed the battery at 0%, although the inverter was working. The installer explained that the update had reset the battery reserve setting and restored it remotely. After the next charge cycle, the display corrected itself, and peak shaving resumed without any lost power.
