Replacing our aging lead-acid bank with a growatt mic compatible LiFePO4 Battery changed how we use our rooftop solar. Before the change, our 10kWh storage system was barely making it through dinner. By 7:30, the inverter switched to grid, even though the panels had produced plenty during the afternoon. I wanted to keep that energy.
I installed the new battery in a ventilated utility room beside the inverter. My electrician handled the wiring and added a dedicated breaker, while I mounted the battery on its brackets and connected the communications cable. Setup took most of a Saturday, including firmware updates and checking the battery management system settings. The app recognized the pack almost immediately, but the state-of-charge reading stayed at 0% for nearly ten minutes. I nearly panicked, then realized the inverter needed a restart after the firmware update. After that, charging began normally.
The biggest difference shows up between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m., when my utility charges peak rates. I now set the battery to charge from excess solar and discharge automatically during those hours. On a typical sunny day, we run the refrigerator, heat-pump water heater, lights, and dishwasher from stored power instead of buying expensive electricity. Our evening consumption averages around 7kWh, and the battery usually still has 25% remaining by bedtime. I keep a 20% reserve for outages, so it is not drained completely.
Our monthly bill fell from roughly $210 to $125 during the first full month, though weather and usage vary. That is about $85 saved, which feels more noticeable than the marketing estimates I saw online. The battery also makes the house quieter during outages because the backup circuit transfers in seconds. I tested it once by turning off the main breaker; the lights flickered briefly, then stayed on, safely powering our dinner.
