Solution Solar Inverter
Running my home from stored solar energy has changed the way I think about electricity bills. I installed a 10 kWh lithium battery beside my existing panels last spring, paired with a growatt inverter 8kw. My main goal was simple: use less grid power during the expensive evening hours.
On sunny days, the panels usually fill the battery by about 2 or 3 p.m. Instead of sending all that extra solar back to the grid for a modest credit, the battery holds it. Around 5 p.m., when the kids come home, the oven goes on, and our electricity rate jumps, the battery takes over. It normally carries us through the evening until midnight. I keep a small reserve for unexpected grid failures too.
The bill difference has been more noticeable than I expected. Before installing the solar battery, our summer bills averaged around $180. Since adding storage, they have generally landed between $75 and $95, even though our usage has not changed much. The biggest savings come from avoiding peak-hour electricity, not from producing more solar. The monitoring app makes that easy to see; I can watch the battery charge, inverter output, and household load in real time.
I did have one frustrating moment. During a firmware update, the app showed the battery as offline for an hour. The system continued powering the house, so it was not an interruption, but I still checked the cables twice before realizing it was only a communication issue. After the update, everything returned to normal.
So far, the benefit is quiet, automatic peak shaving. I rarely think about the system now, except when I see the monthly bill. For me, this home energy storage setup has been less about energy independence and more about making the solar power I already generate genuinely useful.
