Running my home on solar storage has changed the way I think about electricity bills, especially during peak hours.
I installed a 10kWh lithium battery alongside my rooftop panels and a growatt 6000tl3s inverter last spring. The installation was fairly straightforward, although the electrician spent extra time balancing the phases and updating the monitoring settings. Once everything was commissioned, I set the battery to charge from solar during the day and discharge after 4:30 p.m., when our utility rate jumps.
That schedule has been the biggest practical win. On sunny days, my panels usually fill the battery by mid-afternoon. We then use stored energy for cooking, laundry, lighting, and the heat pump instead of buying expensive grid power. My evening consumption is modest, but shifting those few kilowatt-hours consistently saves about $2 to $4 per day in summer. That works out to roughly $65 to $80 monthly, which makes the battery feel worthwhile rather than merely impressive on paper. In winter, savings are smaller because cloudy weather leaves less surplus solar, but the battery still covers the refrigerator and evening essentials during short outages.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. The battery stopped discharging one afternoon because the inverter app showed a communication warning. I power-cycled the Wi-Fi dongle and restarted the inverter, but the warning returned. Eventually I found the battery breaker had tripped after a brief neighborhood outage. Resetting it restored normal operation, and the monitoring app caught up within a few minutes. I now check the battery state of charge and error messages weekly, rather than assuming everything is fine.
The system is not completely hands-off, but it has been dependable and quiet. I like seeing my self-consumption rise and peak grid usage fall without changing our routine much at home.
