Solution Solar Battery
Running our household on solar power became much more practical after I added the growatt 10k LiFePO4 Battery to our garage setup last spring. During the day, our rooftop panels usually cover the refrigerator, heat pump, and normal electronics, but before the battery, we sent a lot of excess electricity back to the grid for very little credit. Now the battery charges from solar around midday and runs the house through the expensive evening hours.
The difference showed up on my first full utility bill. My time-of-use peak rate starts at 4:00 p.m., so I set the inverter to hold battery power until then. By bedtime, we had usually used roughly 6 to 8 kWh from storage instead of buying those units at the highest price. Our monthly bill dropped by about $62, although weather and household habits naturally change the exact amount. That saving makes the solar battery feel less like an impressive gadget and more like a useful household appliance.
I did have one small scare during the second week. The battery stopped discharging at 18% state of charge, even though the lights were on. I checked the monitoring app and found that backup reserve had accidentally been set to 20% during setup. Lowering the reserve to 15% fixed it immediately, and the system has behaved normally since. I now leave that reserve in place because short outages are common here during storms.
What I appreciate most is not the headline capacity but the quiet routine. The Growatt battery makes no noise I can notice, and the automatic transfer keeps our evening usage simple. I occasionally check battery state of charge, solar production, and grid imports from the app, but I rarely need to touch anything.
