Every evening, I used to watch the electricity meter climb whenever our heat pump, oven, and water heater ran together. Since installing a 10 kWh lithium solar battery last spring, that habit has changed. The battery charges from our rooftop solar during the afternoon, then powers the house through the expensive evening hours.
The biggest surprise has been how noticeable the peak-hour bill savings are. Before the battery, our home used roughly 18 to 22 kWh from the grid on a typical day. Now, on sunny days, grid usage often drops below 5 kWh, even though our routine has not changed much. I usually run the dishwasher after dinner, cook normally, and let the battery handle those loads. Our monthly electricity bill fell by about 35 percent over the first three months, despite using more heating than last year.
I monitor everything through the inverter app and the deye energy meter. Seeing solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption together has helped me adjust small habits. For example, I delay laundry until late morning when the panels are producing well, leaving more battery capacity for the evening.
One minor issue appeared during a cloudy week. The battery reached its reserve level earlier than expected, and the system switched to grid power before dinner. At first I thought something was wrong, but the app showed that our battery backup reserve was set to 30 percent. I reduced it to 15 percent, while keeping enough emergency capacity for short outages. That immediately made the stored solar energy more useful.
The system has not eliminated my electricity bill, and winter will test it properly. Still, the combination of solar panels, battery storage, and sensible load timing feels practical rather than futuristic. I especially appreciate that the battery quietly works in the background. I rarely think about it now; I simply notice that the meter spins slower when our household is busiest.
