Our small rooftop solar system used to feel like a half-finished project until I added battery storage last spring. Before the battery, our electricity use was fairly predictable. Solar production peaked while everyone was out, then cooking, laundry, and air conditioning pushed us into the utility’s peak period. After installation, the inverter charges the battery from excess solar, and I set it to discharge between 4:00 and 9:00 p.m. That simple schedule has made the biggest practical difference.

My first full month with storage lowered the bill by about $58, even though the weather was mixed. The following month saved closer to $71 because we had several sunny days and I shifted dishwasher and washing machine use into daylight hours too. I am not pretending the battery makes electricity free—there are still grid connection charges and a small monthly battery payment—but watching the evening meter stay nearly flat is satisfying.

The one hiccup came during a firmware update. The battery stopped discharging for one night, so the house quietly pulled power from the grid. I noticed it because the monitoring app showed zero output, not because anything in the house failed. After restarting the inverter and checking the manufacturer’s instructions, normal operation returned the next afternoon.

For me, the best feature is control over when solar power gets used. During a brief outage, the battery kept our refrigerator, Wi-Fi router, and lights running, making the interruption far less stressful than it otherwise would.
