Running our washing machine and dishwasher after sunset used to feel like a small financial mistake. Since adding a 10-kWh lithium iron phosphate solar battery last spring, that habit has become one of my favorite changes at home.
Our rooftop panels charge the battery through the afternoon, and the battery powers the house during the expensive evening window. I have a grid tie solar inverter, which sends excess solar to the grid when the battery is full and switches smoothly to battery backup when needed.
Before storage, my utility bill averaged around $180 in summer. This year, even with similar weather, my highest monthly bill was $94. The biggest difference is not mysterious: I set the battery to stop drawing from the grid at 4:30pm and discharge until 9pm. That five-hour period used to add roughly $3–$4 per day. Now most of that energy comes from my own solar battery.
I did have one minor troubleshooting moment. After a firmware update, my monitoring app showed the battery stuck at 62%. The inverter was still working, but the battery state of charge refused to move. I turned off the backup breaker for five minutes, restarted it, and the percentage began changing normally. I emailed support afterward, and they explained that the update had temporarily confused the battery management system. It has not happened again.
What I appreciate most is the quiet, practical performance. I do not notice any noise, and during a short outage in June, the lights and refrigerator stayed on without me touching anything. The backup power is not meant for running every appliance indefinitely, but it handles essentials comfortably.
I am still learning how to balance battery reserve settings with savings. I keep a 25% reserve for outages, and that feels like a compromise.
