I installed a 10 kWh solar battery in my garage last spring, mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity. My rooftop panels already covered most daytime use, but our cooking, laundry, and heat-pump demand arrived after sunset. The battery has made that mismatch much less frustrating.
The setup was less dramatic than I expected. An electrician mounted the battery beside the inverter, added a backup subpanel, and configured the energy management app. I specifically chose a system paired with a giandel inverter for a small off-grid shed circuit, while the main house uses a hybrid inverter. The app showed solar production, battery state of charge, and household consumption, although the first day’s numbers took a while to update correctly.
The biggest practical win is peak-hour bill savings. I set the battery to charge from solar until it reaches 95 percent, then discharge from 5 p.m. until bedtime. On sunny summer days, it still has roughly 30 to 40 percent remaining when we go to sleep. Before storage, our evening usage pushed us into the utility’s highest rate period. Now the battery supplies the oven, lights, television, and dishwasher during those hours. My monthly bill has fallen by about $45 to $70, depending on weather and how often we run the heat pump. That is more noticeable than watching the app’s daily graphs.
One small troubleshooting moment taught me not to panic. After a firmware update, the battery stopped discharging and sat at 100 percent overnight. I checked the settings and found that backup reserve had somehow changed to 100 percent. Lowering it to 20 percent restored normal operation immediately. Since then, I glance at the reserve setting whenever I update the software.
The battery has not eliminated grid power, but stored solar energy makes expensive hours practical for my family.
