After installing my solar battery last spring, I stopped thinking of electricity as something that simply disappeared into the grid. My system is a modest 10kWh lithium iron phosphate unit paired with 6.6kW of rooftop solar. The setup took one long Saturday. The installer mounted the inverter and battery beside the switchboard, then walked me through the app. I set a 20% reserve, so there is still enough stored energy for a blackout or overnight essentials.

The biggest difference appears between 4pm and 9pm. Before storage, I regularly used the oven, heat-pump dryer, and kettle while rates were highest. Now the solar battery covers most of that period. My evening grid consumption has fallen by roughly 8kWh on a normal day. Our monthly bill dropped from around $220 to $120, although weather and tariffs obviously move those numbers around. I especially notice the saving during hot weeks when the air conditioner runs until bedtime.

I did have one nervous moment in July. The app showed “standby” instead of charging, even though the panels were producing. I checked the breaker, restarted the gateway, and discovered a loose communication cable after a technician’s quick visit. Once reseated, the battery resumed charging immediately. It was a minor fault, but I appreciated having live battery monitoring rather than guessing.

For me, the value is not just the advertised backup feature. It is the quieter feeling of using my own solar power after sunset. I still pull from the grid on cloudy days, and I am not pretending the system erased my bill. But the combination of solar panels, a home battery, and sensible charging settings has made our electricity costs much easier to manage at home. I would happily install another ga battery if we move to a larger home.
