Running our home on solar power felt satisfying, but adding a home battery changed how I think about electricity. Before installation, rooftop panels sent afternoon energy back to the grid, then we bought it after sunset at the expensive peak rate.

The installer fitted a 10-kWh lithium-ion battery in the garage. It took most of a day, and the electrician explained the monitoring app clearly. The system charges from solar first, then discharges during peak hours. I left it in automatic mode and have barely touched the settings.

The biggest difference appears between 4:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., when cooking dinner, running the dishwasher, and using air conditioning used to push our bill upward. Now the battery supplies most of that demand. On sunny days, the panels refill it by early afternoon, and we finish the evening with about 20–30% remaining. Our monthly electricity bill has dropped from roughly $180 in summer to $105, despite similar usage. Saving around $75 monthly makes the payback feel much more believable.

I did have one scare during the first week. The battery stopped discharging as the evening peak began. The app showed a warning about grid settings. I called the installer instead of guessing. They found a software update had reset the backup reserve to 100%. Once they restored it to 20%, the battery immediately resumed normal operation. Since then, I have kept that reserve for outages and tested it by switching off the main breaker. The lights and refrigerator stayed on, giving me confidence.

For me, the best benefit is freedom from watching hourly electricity prices. I still check production and state of charge occasionally, but I no longer plan routines around utility rates. The solar battery turns midday sunshine into evening comfort, and that practical reliability matters more than impressive hardware on the wall.
