8 months ago I installed a 48 volt 100ah lithium battery in my garage, pairing it with six rooftop solar panels and a hybrid inverter. I chose a 5kWh setup mainly to stop buying expensive evening electricity from the grid.
The installation was less dramatic than I expected. My electrician mounted the battery on a concrete wall, ran short cables, and configured the inverter to charge from solar first. The only annoying part was getting the monitoring app to recognize the battery. It showed zero percentage for nearly an hour, even though the inverter display showed charging. A reboot and one firmware update fixed it, and it has been boringly reliable since.
The biggest difference appears between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m., when our household normally cooks, runs the dishwasher, and watches television. Previously, those hours pushed us into the utility's peak rate. Now the solar battery takes over automatically.
On sunny days, the battery reaches 100 percent by mid-afternoon, then carries the house through dinner without pulling from the grid. On cloudy days, it still covers most of the evening, although I sometimes reserve the final 20% for overnight outages.
My monthly bill fell from roughly $145 to $92 in the first full month, and it has averaged around $98 since. That is not a miracle—I still pay connection fees and buy power on rainy stretches—but the peak-hour savings are obvious. I can see the battery discharging on the app while the meter barely moves.
Would I add capacity? Probably, but only after another winter of real data. Honestly, for now, this home energy storage system has delivered exactly what I wanted: fewer peak charges, better use of my solar power, and less dependence on utility pricing.
